HL Deb 13 October 1986 vol 480 cc671-2WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Oxfam funded welfare workers, Fr. Smangaliso (Secretary-General of the Bishops Conference), Rev. Abraham Maja (Executive Secretary of the Northern Transvaal Council of Churches), Andre Roux (Grahamstown Rural Committee), Peter Kerchoff (Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness), Colin Jooste (Chairman of the Border Council of Churches) and Arthur Mkhwanzi (Southern Africa Bishops Conference) have been released from detention by the South African Government, and if not whether they will make representations.

Baroness Young

Mr. Roux, Mr. Kerchoff and Mr. Jooste are reported to have been released. The Reverend Maja and Mr. Mkhwanzi are believed still to be in detention. I understand that a date for a release application by Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa may be set in the near future. We have made representations to the South African Government about these cases, as well as on the general issue of detention without trial.
