Mr. Allen Adams

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as the percentage of Scottish schoolchildren who enjoy free transport to school; how this figure compares with the same period in 1985; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John MacKay

The school transport survey undertaken in September 1985 showed that 156,294 (18.5 per cent.) of the total pupil population received free school transport. Figures for 1986 are not yet available.
