HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c304W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps Her Majesty's Government are taking to help relieve the famine in the Sudan; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chris Patten

We have given substantial help to relieve famine in Sudan worth almost £35 million since late 1984. There is enough food in northern Sudan and harvest prospects are encouraging, but many are at risk in the south and we hope food airlifts by the International Committee of the Red Cross, to which we have pledged £250,000, will be resumed. We are ready to do more when conditions permit.
