HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c300W
Mr. Michael Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what criteria are proposed for colleges of advanced education to gain access to the polytechnic central admission system.

Mr. Walden

In proposing the admission of certain colleges of higher education to the polytechnics central admission system, the Department's criteria are as follows:

Eligible colleges would have no access to a clearing house and would be offering

  1. (a) more than one degree course to be covered by PCAS;
  2. (b) degree courses of a non-specialist nature;
  3. (c) degree courses which could not reasonably be expected to recruit through the central registration and clearing house, pending a merger of the latter with PCAS.

Institutions already using CRCH were excluded except where their non-initial teacher training courses fell under category (c).

I understand that the PCAS board is to decide in January whether extension to those colleges meeting these criteria can take place, following a review of experiences obtained during its first full cycle of admissions in 1985–86.
