HL Deb 31 July 1986 vol 479 c1092WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What new initiatives they propose to ensure that the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources fulfils adequately its objectives, in view of abundant evidence of over-fishing in waters around South Georgia.

Baroness Young

Concern over previously unregulated fishing in waters around South Georgia motivated Britain and others to negotiate the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. Since the convention entered into force in 1982, progressively more restrictive measures have applied to the South Georgia fishery. In 1985, for example, directed fishing for Antarctic cod was banned. We shall be taking full account of 1985–86 fishing trends in our approach to this autumn's meeting of the convention's commission.
