HL Deb 31 July 1986 vol 479 c1093WA
Lord Fletcher

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps have been taken to ensure the survival of Birkbeck College.

The Earl of Swinton

Following representations from London University, the University Grants Committee decided on 10th July that its 1986–87 grant to the university should be calculated on the basis of the same assumptions as in previous years in respect of Birkbeck College. This has resulted in an increase of £600,000 in the total recurrent grant to London University. Decisions about how the grant is allocated among constituent colleges, schools and institutes rest with the University of London Court. The committee has also decided that from 1987–88 part-time students should be resourced on the same basis, taking account of the length of the course, as full-time students on equivalent courses.
