HL Deb 31 July 1986 vol 479 c1093WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In view of the statement by the Earl of Swinton on 24th June 1986 (col. 151) that the Department of Education and Science had asked the Inner London Education Authority to withdraw the teaching pack "Auschwitz: Yesterday's Racism" pending its revision, whether this has now been done; and when the revised text will be placed in the Library, as promised (col. 153).

The Earl of Swinton

It is the teachers' guide accompanying the teaching pack "Auschwitz: Yesterday's Racism" that has given serious cause for concern. The Inner London Education Authority has informed the department, in response to its letter of 29th May, that it would be virtually impossible to withdraw the teaching pack. The department has written to the authority to ask why this is the case in view of its earlier assurance that copies of the revised guide will be sent to all known purchasers of the pack, to stress the need for urgency, and to ask when the authority expects to have revised the teachers' guide. A copy of that revised guide will be placed in the Library as soon as it becomes available.
