HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 c595W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether there are any plans to light those stretches of motorway which pass over rivers or streams on the M25 which are currently unlit.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

I have nothing more to add to my replies to my hon. Friend's questions on Tuesday 25 February, at column502.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of the M42 are lit; how many miles are unlit; and how many miles are planned to be lit.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Currently 6 miles are lit, 32 miles are unlit and there are plans to light a further 2 miles.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will estimate the cost of lighting (a) the remaining stages of all Britain's motorways, (b) the M25 and (c) the M1; and if he will publish the estimated maintenance charges and cost for each.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

It would cost approximately £110 million, £9 million and £11 million to light the remaining unlit stages of motorways in England, the M25 and the M1 respectively. The related maintenance costs would be approximately £11 million, £0.9 million and £1.1 million respectively.

Costs are at 1985–86 prices.
