HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 cc430-1W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the implications of unclassified research as a basis for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for encouragement of collaboration under the strategic defence initiative.

Mr. Walden

It is widely accepted that teaching in higher education can benefit from a close association with research. In "A Strategy for Higher Education in the 1990s" (September 1984) the University Grants Committee saysable young students receive a unique stimulus from being taught by those engaged in extending the frontiers of their disciplines.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what discussions have been held with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals on the matter of university participation in the strategic defence initiative.

Mr. Walden

Officials in the Department have had a preliminary discussion with the Secretary General of the committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals over the arrangements to enable universities to submit proposals for participation in SDI research projects.
