HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 c430W
Mr. Radice

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what financial savings have arisen from the closure of schools following from his Department's circular 2/81, "Falling Rolls and Surplus Places".

Sir Keith Joseph

The information is not collected by the Department. However 855,000 surplus places have been removed since 1975. This has enabled local education authorities to make significant savings on teaching and non-teaching costs, and an Audit Commission calculation, repriced to 1985–86, indicates that at least £25 million might be saved for every 100,000 surplus secondary school places taken out of use.
