Short asked the Paymaster General what is the net Exchequer cost per person covered by training in industry and YTS.

The net Exchequer cost of YTS per filled place in 1985–86 is likely to be in the range £1,400 to £1,600 per annum. The size of this range indicates the considerable uncertainty that attaches to estimates of net Exchequer costs, because of the number of assumptions that are involved.

Training in industry comprises a collection of separate small schemes. Due to the different functions of these schemes, and their small scale, no estimate of aggregate net Exchequer cost is available.
