HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 c130W
Mr. Richard Holt

asked the Paymaster General what training, experience, commercial or industrial knowledge is required before a panellist is appointed to an industrial tribunal.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Lay members of industrial tribunals are chosen for their knowledge and practical experience of industrial relations. Industrial tribunal chairmen in England and Wales are appointed by my noble Friend the Lord Chancellor and in Scotland by the Lord President of the Court of Session. They must be barristers, advocates or solicitors of at least seven years' standing.
