HC Deb 19 December 1986 vol 107 cc772-3W
Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans exist to provide dual carriageway trunk roads in Scotland with central reservation crash barriers.

Mr. Ancram

Central reserve barriers will continue to be provided on dual carriageway trunk roads where they can be justified. The whole length of the A74 from Millbank to the border is being provided with barriers, and the need for their installation on other roads is being reviewed, taking account of traffic volumes and the incidence of cross-over accidents.

Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of dual carriageway trunk roads in Scotland have central reservation crash barriers.

Mr. Ancram

Forty-eight miles (18 per cent.) of the 265 miles of dual carriageway trunk road in Scotland have central reserve barriers.

Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans exist to provide central reservation crash barriers on all of Scotland's motorways; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

All new trunk motorways with a central reserve of up to 10 m. width will be constructed with central reserve barriers. Such barriers will be installed on existing trunk motorways where they can be justified.

Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of the Scottish motorway network includes central reservation crash barriers.

Mr. Ancram

Thirty-six miles (25 per cent.) of the 144 miles of motorway for which my right hon. and learned Friend is responsible have central reserve barriers. I do not hold information on the Glasgow urban section of the M8 which is the responsibility of Strathclyde regional council.
