HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 cc436-7W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if any European shipbuilding intervention and payments have been made to private shipbuilding yards; and if he will list any such payments and the shipbuilding yards concerned.

Mr. Giles Shaw

[pursuant to his reply, 28 November 1986, c. 376]: Since the shipbuilding intervention fund scheme began in 1977, the following payments have been made to shipbuilding yards in private ownership:

  • Richards (Shipbuilders) Ltd.—£5,869,247 in respect of 11 ships.
  • Cochranes (Shipbuilders) Ltd.—£5,029,459 in respect of 20 ships.
  • Richard Dunston Ltd.—£3,600,000 in respect of 10 ships.
  • McTay Marine Ltd.—£2,628,479 in respect of 17 ships.
  • James Cook Ltd.—£328,273 in respect of 2 ships.
  • Cubow Ltd.—£197,110 in respect of 2 ships.
  • G. &. O. Brown Ltd.—£137,808 in respect of 2 ships.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if any intervention fund payments have been, or are to be made for shiprepair work.

Mr. Giles Shaw

[pursuant to his reply, 28 November 1986, c. 376]: Under the existing European Council directive on state aid to shipbuilding, shipbuilding intervention fund may not be used to support repairing. The draft directive now being discussed makes no provision for ship-repair contracts to receive production aid of this kind.
