§ Mr. Wainwrightasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he is satisfied with the operation of the regulations governing cigarette vending machines and, in particular, measures to deter juveniles from using them.
§ Mrs. CurrieI have been asked to reply. The Protection of Children (Tobacco) Act 1986 obliges the court to order those responsible for tobacco vending machines to prevent them being used by young people or to remove them. A circular drawing attention to these provisions was issued on 8 October, the day the Act came into force, to bodies responsible for enforcing the law and for the educational and social well being of young people. A copy was placed in the Library.
