HL Deb 21 April 1986 vol 473 cc1064-5WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware that Commander Green is reported (Observer, 30th March 1986) to have said that he believes his relative the late Miss Hilda Murrell was murdered by their agents and whether in the light of this they will set up a public inquiry into this unsolved killing.

Lord Glenarthur

I understand from the Chief Constable of West Mercia Police that his officers have caused the necessary inquiries to be made about this report, on the basis of which the chief constable is satisfied that there is no substance in the reported allegations. As I indicated to the noble Lord in my reply to his Question of 2nd May 1985 at cols. 468–9, my honourable friend the Minister of State has already indicated in his letter of 28th December 1984 to the honourable Member for Linlithgow that allegations about government intelligence services being involved in this case are totally without foundation. This remains the position. The investigation of any new evidence relating to Miss Murrell's death is a matter for the Chief Constable of West Mercia, and my right honourable friend the Home Secretary does not consider a public inquiry justified.
