asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the programme of research into the strategic defence initiative.

36. Mr. O'Neill

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on British defence manufacturers' expected share of strategic defence initiative research.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Discussions have taken place between the United States and United Kingdom Governments, both at official and ministerial levels, to explore the potential for substantial British participation in the United States SDI research programme that would involve the defence industries, universities and research institutions. The Government are still considering the question.

42. Mr. Wallace

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what defence-related technology Her Majesty's Government hope to secure as a result of participation in the strategic defence initiative.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Discussions with the United States about participation in the SDI research programme have taken into account the potential for deriving advanced technologies of defence related value. The Government are still considering the question.

49. Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the implications for the British independent nuclear deterrent of the development by the United States of America of the strategic defence initiative.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when he intends to publish the agreements he has reached with the United States Department of Defence on strategic defence initiative research.
