HC Deb 22 May 1985 vol 79 cc462-3W
72. Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on his Department's talks with representatives of Charter 77 in Prague.

Mr. Rifkind

During my right hon. and learned Friend's recent visit to Czechoslovakia, two senior members of the delegation had an informal meeting with a number of sympathisers and signatories of the Charter 77 movement. It is normal during visits of this kind to make contact with as wide a range of opinion as possible.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials made use of the meeting to make it clear that there is strong support in the United Kingdom for the full implementation of the Helsinki final act in all the countries of Europe, particularly including its provisions relating to civil and political rights.
