§ Mr. Dobsonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will consider introducing to all blood transfusion centres a form of consent, to be signed by all blood donors, which will allow them to indicate clearly if they wish their blood to be used for National Health Service or private patients; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeNo. The National Blood Transfusion Service is based on the principle that blood is given by voluntary donors for use where it is needed by doctors for patients. The use of the blood is determined by clinical need and availability. Any suggestion that donors should impose conditions on the use of their own blood would be tasteless and impracticable.
