HC Deb 25 March 1985 vol 76 c77W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many women were held in prisons in Scotland for the years 1982, 1983 and 1984, distinguishing between those held on remand and sentenced prisoners.

Mr. Ancram

The information requested on the numbers in custody in Scottish penal establishments in 1982 was published in appendix No. 3 to the "Prisons in Scotland Report for 1982", Cmnd. 8980. Figures for 1983 were published in table 2 of Scottish Home and Health Department Statistical Bulletin No. 2/1984, "Prisons Statistics Scotland 1983". Copies of both documents are in the Library. During 1984, the average daily population of women held in Scottish penal establishments was 132, of whom 49 were on remand and 83 were persons under sentence; of those 64 were adult prisoners.
