asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will provide his estimate of the total expenditure incurred by his Department in providing income and allowances for those under the age of 65 years who are dependent on state benefit because of unemployment.

Mr. Whitney

The total cost of unemployment benefit, supplementary benefit, rent rebates and allowances and rate rebates paid because the recipient was unemployed is estimated as £6.2 billion in 1984–85.
