HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 c450W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what guidelines he will issue to local education authorities in respect of the use of electronic calculators by pupils in primary schools both in classroom and examination conditions.

Mr. Dunn

The Cockcroft report pointed to some of the changes that the advent of calculators would bring about in the primary mathematics curriculum; the Department has distributed 100,000 copies of a guide to the report for primary schools, drawing attention to this and other matters. The school curriculum development committee is supporting a pilot project on the mathematics curriculum from six to 13, which is investigating these changes in greater detail.
