asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average length of service for a prison governor; and if he will make a statement.

The average period that prison governors have been in the Prison Service is as follows:

  • Governor class I—24 years 1 month
  • Governor class II—21 years 7 months
  • Governor class III—17 years 11 months
  • Governor class IV—13 years 11 months
