Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the total expenditure on National Health Service ancillary services for the latest available year including practitioner service staff;

(2) what was the total expenditure on National Health Service professional and technical services for the latest available year;

(3) what was the total expenditure on National Health Service administrative and clerical services for the latest available year;

(4) what was the total expenditure on National Health Service works and maintenance services for the latest available year.

[pursuant to his reply, 9 July 1985, c. 374]: We do not collect figures in this precise form. The table gives figures derived from the annual accounts of health authorities in England for 1983–84, which are summarised in House of Commons paper No. 331 of 1984–85. Booklets giving a more detailed summary of the accounts for recent years are also available in the Library.

Notes:

1. The figures exclude the expenses of the Dental Estimates Board, Prescription Pricing Authority and other special health authorities providing NHS central services.

2. The costs of ancillary staff employed in the family practitioner services are not separately identifiable centrally.

3. The figure for catering, domestic etc services include expenditure on those services which appear in the published summary as part of "Headquarters administration". This expenditure is excluded from the total for headquarters administration given in the table.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will give, in round figures, the annual cost of the National Health Service for each of the last five years, specifying for each year the amount spent on administrative, clinical and auxiliary services, respectively, and the percentage figures each represents of the whole;

(2) if he will give, in round figures, the annual cost of the National Health Service for each of the past five years. specifying the numbers employed and the total wage bill in respect of each year, giving the wage bill as a percentage of the total annual cost;

(3) if he will give, in round figures, the total annual cost of the National Health Service for each of the past five years, broken down into regions and districts, respectively; and what is the percentage figure each represents of the whole.

Friend to my right hon. and learned Friend's replies to my hon. Friend the Member for Norfolk, North (Mr. Howell) on 18 January 1984, at columns 251–55 and 21 December 1984 at columns 412–14. These are the latest figures available. The numbers of staff employed in the hospital and community health services (in whole time equivalents) on 30 September of each year were:
