HC Deb 22 February 1985 vol 73 cc616-7W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland on what basis the Scottish Development Agency has stated that regional grant aid on offer in Scotland was insufficiently large to attract to Scotland the proposed £165 million investment from Advanced Micro Devices Ltd. of California.

Mr. Allan Stewart

Advanced Micro Devices' decision not to locate in Scotland was a matter for the commercial judgment of the company. Within the ceilings set by the European Community, Scotland offers highly attractive regional grant aid, and additional benefits are available in the, form of European Community loans and enterprise zone fiscal incentives. But the availability of grants is only one of many factors influencing the choice of location for internationally mobile projects.
