HC Deb 19 December 1985 vol 89 c277W
21. Mr. Charles Morrison

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to what extent he is encouraging an increase in the output of protein crops in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Gummer

The Government actively support Community action to encourage the protein sector, which includes the payment of a subsidy on dried peas and field beans production. In 1982 we pressed successfully for this scheme to be extended to human consumption products, as well as those for animal feed. Earlier this year we secured the introduction of monthly increments in order to assist orderly marketing of this expanding crop. The Government have maintained their funding of research designed to produce improved varieties of these protein crops and advice to growers is available from ADAS.
