HC Deb 30 October 1984 vol 65 c907W
19. Mr. Maples

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will seek ways to increase the salaries of those teachers in shortage subjects such as mathematics and physics.

Sir Keith Joseph

School teachers' salaries are a matter for the Burnham Primary and Secondary Committee. There is some discretion within the existing arrangements to pay more to teachers in scarce specialisms if employers so wish. In view of the better recruitment of teachers in shortage subjects, including mathematics and physics, in recent years, I do not believe that differential pay as such would at present be justified.
