Mr. McTaggart

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the annual cost of tax relief on mortgage interest in (a) Scotland and (b) the United Kingdom in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the average subsidy per owner-occupier through tax relief on mortgage interest in (a) Scotland and (b) the United Kingdom, in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Moore

[pursuant to his reply, 22 November 1984, c. 270]: The average cost of mortgage interest tax relief per owner-occupier in 1984–85 is estimated to be about £270 both in Scotland and in the United Kingdom as a whole.
