§ Mr. Marlowasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will call for a report from the appropriate chief constable as to how many people have been interviewed in connection with the vandalism of National Coal Board property at Cadeby;
(2) if he will call for a report from the appropriate chief constable as to how many people have been charged in connection with the vandalism of National Coal Board property at Cadeby.
§ Mr. Giles ShawThe chief constable of South Yorkshire tells me that 21 people have been interviewed and eight adults have been charged with offences of burgulary or criminal damage. Additionally, one juvenile has been reported for process by way of summons for burglary.
§ Mr. Mark Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been committed for trial to the Crown court for offences arising out of the mining dispute: and how many have so far been dealt with.
§ Mr. MellorAccording to information supplied to my noble and learned Friend the Lord Chancellor, the Crown court has been notified of the committal of 165 defendants in cases identified as directly arising out of the mining dispute and has dealt with 31 of them.
§ Mr. Mark Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people, to the latest availalble date, have been arrested and charged with offences arising out of the mining dispute; and how many cases have now been dealt with by the courts.
§ Mr. Giles ShawBetween 13 March and 27 November inclusive, 8,394 arrests were made in connection with the miners' dispute. For the number of charges and cases dealt with by the courts between 13 March and 20 November inclusive, the latest period for which figures are available 545W centrally, I refer my right hon. Friend to the reply I gave to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Rutland and Melton (Mr. Latham) on 22 November at column 242.
