HC Deb 29 November 1984 vol 68 c590W
Mr. Dykes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in view of the observations made by the Food Additives and Contaminants Committee in its report on the review of sweeteners in food and the current level of use of aspartame in aqueous solutions, he will arrange for a review of its use to be undertaken as soon as possible.

Mrs. Fenner

Between the publication of the report and the making of the Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1983 the Food Additives and Contaminants Committee, together with the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment, examined representations for the use of aspartame in soft drinks and recommended that it was safe and suitable for this purpose.

A review of the use of all sweeteners will be undertaken in accordance with the recommendations in the report.
