HC Deb 23 November 1984 vol 68 c311W
Mr. Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the range of initial charges to companies whose products are tested by the British Board of Agrément.

Sir George Young

The charges for assessments by the British Board of Agrément are mainly in the range £4,000 to £6,500.

Mr. Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many staff are employed by the British Board of Agrément.

Sir George Young

On 31 October 1984 69 staff were employed by the British Board of Agrément.

Mr. Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the range of time taken to test products by the British Board of Agrément.

Sir George Young

The range of time taken by the British Board of Agrément to test products varies from a few days to about two years, if simulated weathering is involved. The average time for complete assessment of a product is 15 months.

Mr. Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has considered charging fees for testing products by the British Board of Agrément on the basis of royalties on sales rather than charges at the outset.

Sir George Young

The British Board of Agrément aims to achieve financial self-sufficiency as soon as possible and fees and different methods of charging, including charging on a royalty basis, are regularly reviewed in the light of this.
