HC Deb 17 May 1984 vol 60 c232W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Attorney-General if he will list the powers of the Lord Chancellor to authorise the withdrawal, indefinitely, or for a specified period, of public access already granted and exercised under the Public Records Act 1958, as amended, to files selected for permanent preservation in the Public Records Office; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

Under Section 4(6) of the Public Records Act 1958, as amended, public records in the Public Record Office or other place of deposit appointed by the Lord Chancellor under this Act, shall be temporarily returned at the request of the person by whom or department of office from which they were transferred. Authorisation by the Lord Chancellor is not required for individual temporary withdrawals under this section.
