HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 c187W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what recent representations he has received proposing the compulsory licensing of garages carrying out car repairs and servicing;

(2) whether he has any plans to introduce measures to set up a system of prohibition orders whereby garages which fail to meet necessary standards for car repairs and servicing work will be prohibited from accepting such work;

(3) whether he has any plans to introduce a licensing system for garages carrying out car repairs and servicing work.

Mr. Fletcher

I have received no recent representations proposing the compulsory licensing of garages carrying out car repairs and servicing and at present I have no plans to introduce a system of either compulsory licensing or of prohibition orders. The Director General of Fair Trading, whose discussion paper "Car Servicing and Repairs", published in September 1983, referred to such methods of control, is currently examining the comments on it with a view to publishing a final report later this year.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many garages in the United Kingdom currently undertake car repairs and servicing.

Mr. Fletcher

Precise figures in the form requested are not available but the most recent motor trade inquiry indicated that over 27,000 businesses were primarily involved in the repair and servicing of all types of motor vehicles.
