Hyperactive Children (Hansard, 27 March 1984)

§ Mr. Hunter
asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will make more funds available (a) for research into the causes of hyperactivity, (b) for the care and treatment of hyperactive children and (c) for support for the parents of hyperactive children; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what support and help is available from his Department to the parents or guardians of hyperactive children;
(3) what financial resources are devoted by his Department to the treatment or care of hyperactive children.

I refer my hon. Friend and the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Fife, Central (Mr. Hamilton) on 15 March at column259–60, which described research currently being funded by the Medical Research Council. This Department is also prepared to consider soundly based research proposals in this area. Such proposals would be considered by our mental illness research liaison group and would have to compete for funding with others we receive in the mental health field.
