HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 c11W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what line Her Majesty's Government's representatives will take in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development committees and groups towards world population growth and demographic trends.

Mr. Raison

Her Majesty's Government welcome the discussion of world population growth and demographic trends in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and will be participating in a meeting of the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD in June in which member states will be preparing for the Mexico City population conference.

The Government recognise that current rates of world population growth have serious implications for efforts to promote economic and social development in developing countries. We are therefore prepared to assist in reasonable and well managed programmes directed at limiting the growth of populations wherever this seems appropriate.
