HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc11-2W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had about the setting up of an inland fishing project in the Falkland Islands; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Raison

The Falkland Islands Government are considering a consultant's report on the feasibility of establishing a pilot project for salmon ranching in the Falkland Islands; and are discussing with a commercial concern the possibility of setting up an exploratory survey of inshore fishery resources.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many shepherds there are in the Falkland Islands; and how many more are required.

Mr. Raison

In the 1980 census, 94 people gave their occupation as shepherds and seven as head shepherds. The numbers of shepherds required is a matter for decision by individual farms.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what subsidised public transport services are provided in the Falkland Islands.

Mr. Raison

The Falkland Islands Government subsidises the cost of running the islands' air service (FIGAS) a Government-owned inter-island cargo ship, and a school bus.
