HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 c23W
Mr. Robert Hughes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that the labelling requirements in respect of untreated milk announced on 7 March 1980 are being observed and that consumers are fully aware of the relative advantages and disadvantages, particularly in regard to health considerations, of treated and untreated milk.

Mr. MacGregor

The Milk (Special Designation) (Amendment) Regulations 1982 provide that untreated milk must be clearly labelled "Raw unpasteurised milk". I am satisfied that this requirement is being observed by the great majority of producer-retailers who sell untreated milk, and that appropriate action is being taken against any who are not complying. Some consumers wish to continue to have the choice between treated and untreated milk: the important thing is to ensure that they know what they are buying and that is the purpose of the labelling requirement.
