HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc23-5W
Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what estimates have been made of the cost to fish farmers as a result of whirling disease; whether he is satisfied that the slaughter and disinfectant policy is proving satisfactory; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

I refer the right hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 6 July 1983.

Although we do not operate a slaughter and disinfectant policy, in appropriate cases my fish disease scientists advise fish farmers whose sites have been infected by whirling disease to remove the fish and to disinfect the site. I understand that where this advice has been followed it has been effective.

Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is now prepared to consider payment of compensation to those fish farmers who have had to slaughter fish stocks as a result of whirling disease.

Mr. MacGregor

As I have indicated previously, we do not consider that it would be appropriate to do so.

Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the fish farms that are still subject to a notifiable disease order as a result of whirling disease.
