HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc6-7W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what were the total sums paid in pensions to former employees of British Telecom in each of the last five years;

(2) what were the total pension contributions paid by employees of British Telecom in each of the last five years.

Mr. Butcher

The information is as follows:

£ million 1979–80 1980–81 1981–82 1982–83 1983–84
Total sums paid in pensions (not including lump sums or other benefits) to former employees of British Telecom 96.4 121.2 139.7 161.4 195.5
Total pension contributions paid by employees of British Telecom 65.7 87.7 99.0 108.5 116.4

Note: British Telecom was not separated from the Post Office until 1 October 1981 and a separate staff superannuation scheme for BT was not established until 1 April 1983. Figures are therefore based on approximate apportionment where necessary: 1983–84 figures are estimates based on 10 months actual outturn.
