HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 c533W
Mr. Maples

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many dwellings were owned by all public housing authorities, including new towns, regional and county councils and similar public bodies in England at 1 July 1979 and at 31 December 1983; how many such dwellings were sold; and how many were acquired or built.

Sir George Young

From July 1979 to December 1983 it is estimated from returns made by local housing authorities and new towns in England, that they sold 535,000 dwellings, acquired 15,000 and had 227,000 new dwellings completed. Including other gains and losses, their stock is estimated to have been reduced by about 350,000 during this period to 4.8 million at December 1983.

Estimates are not available of dwellings owned by other public authorities, including county councils.
