Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs have been found through the young workers scheme; and what is his estimate of the average cost per job.

Since its inception in January 1982 over 287,000 applications have been approved under this scheme. It is estimated that the net Exchequer costs for each person who would otherwise have been unemployed and claiming benefit is £2,200.
