HC Deb 21 March 1984 vol 56 cc462-5W
Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of notified vacancies unfilled at each jobcentre in Lancashire in each of the standard industrial classifications; and what is the total number of unemployed at each jobcentre on the same date.

Mr. Alan Clark

Table 1 gives the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled on 3 February at each jobcentre in the county of Lancashire, analysed according to the 1980 standard industrial classification. Table 2 gives the total numbers of unemployed claimants in the jobcentres areas on 9 February.

The vacancy figures relate only to vacancies notified to the jobcentres and remaining unfilled on the day of the count; vacancies notified to jobcentres are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the economy as a whole. The figures do not include vacancies notified to professional and executive recruitment offices or community programme vacancies.

Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs were lost in the county of Lancashire in 1983 in the following industries (a) mining, (b) chemicals (c) metal manufacture, (d) footwear, (e) mechanical engineering, (f) textiles and (g) paper and printing.

Mr. Alan Clark

Statistics of job losses are not available, but net changes in the number of jobs may be calculated by comparing employment figures at different dates. The following is the latest available information for the county of Lancashire and relates to the period from June 1978 to September 1981.

Standard Industrial Classification 1968 Order or Minimum List Heading (MLH) Net changes in the numbers of employees in employment: June 1978 to September 1981 (thousands)

Order V Chemicals -2.6
Order VI Metal manufacture +0.4

Order VII Mechanical engineering +1.7
Order XIII Textiles -16.0
Order XVIII Paper and printing -1.0

Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the average level of unemployment in the United Kingdom and other European Economic Community countries in each of the years since 1973.

Mr. Alan Clark

The average unemployment levels as published by the Statistical Office of the European Community are as follows. The figures are not comparable because of differences in the size of the labour force and varying concepts and coverage of unemployment.
