asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the number of civil servants who have been posted (a) to regional offices or (b) within his Department itself, to deal with the reorganisation of the metropolitan counties.

Approximately 30 staff (full-time equivalents) in my Department are engaged on the abolition of the GLC and the metropolitan county councils. All staff have been found from within the Department's overall manpower target; no staff have been posted to the regional offices specifically for this work.
