asked the Secretary of State for Transport in respect of what public road passenger services fuel duty rebate is paid.

Mr. Ridley

Fuel duty rebate is paid in respect of stage carriage services, as defined in part I of the Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981, which are available to the general public and are neither excursions nor tours.

Mr. Fry

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the fuel duty rebate per thousand passenger kilometres for each of the following categories of operator: (a) London Transport, (b) public transport executives, (c) the National Bus Company, (d) municipal undertakings and (e) independent undertakings.

In 1982, approximately £3.17p fuel duty rebate per 1,000 passenger kilometres was paid to London Transport. Comparative figures are not available for other operators. The amounts of fuel duty rebate paid per passenger journey in Great Britain in 1982 were as follows:
