HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 cc26-7W
Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the most recent estimate of the number of young people who have refused a place on the youth training scheme and had their benefit reduced.

Dr. Boyson

The numbers of young people who have had their supplementary benefit reduced because they have, without good reason, refused or left prematurely a place on the youth training scheme, are as follows:

Refusal of place Premature leaving
887 6,123

These figures cover a period of approximately six months up to 8 May 1984.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many young people in Walthamstow have had their benefit cut as a result of leaving the youth training scheme prematurely or because of refusal to accept an offered place.

Dr. Boyson

Information about young people whose benefit has been reduced because they have refused places on the youth training scheme or left them prematurely is available only for the period from December 1983 to May 1984. In this period Walthamstow local office made reductions only in respect of six premature leavers.
