HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 c689W
Sir Philip Goodhart

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what forms of encouragement he is giving to highway authorities acting as local agents for his Department to undertake small highway improvement schemes for accident reduction on trunk roads.

Mrs. Chalker

A specific allocation of £4.5 million has been made this year for expeniture on accident-reducing, small scale engineering works on trunk roads. The money will be spent by local highway authorities, acting as agents for the Department, in the course of their normal programme of remedial works.

We expect to publish an updated version of the accident investigation and prevention manual later this year, and we plan to issue at the same time a circular, "Roads", to authorities about the techniques described in the manual. The circular will emphasise the high cost-effective beneits which can be obtained by the use of these techniques on all roads, including trunk roads.
