§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will estimate the cost of introducing a system whereby drivers of cars and other vehicles in the United Kingdom were required to drive on the right of the road; and what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government on this issue.
§ Mrs. ChalkerAt today's prices the cost of the physical works alone — traffic signs, junction layouts and so on—is likely to be in excess of £1,500 million. In addition, there would be a significant increase in accidents and casualties. I see no advantage in such a change, and we would be wholly opposed to it.
§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Transport what procedures exist for the European Assembly to be provided with information and advice by his Department in relation to the study which the Assembly is undertaking into the advisability of the United Kingdom an the Republic of Ireland changing their arrangements on which side of the road to drive on.

§ Mrs. ChalkerNo formal proceures exist for my department to provide information to the European Parliament. United Kingdom MEPs are normally provided, on request, with briefing on United Kingdom policy towards subjects under discussion in the European Parliament. Neither the Parliament itself nor any United Kingdom MEP has been in touch with my Department about the study to which my hon. Friend refers.
