Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list (a) the number of people employed as maintenance staff in the National Health Service in the year ended 31 March 1983, (b) the aggregate remuneration of maintenance staff in that period, (c) how much overtime was worked in that period and (d) how the balance of the maintenance costs in the National Health Service was made up in that period.

  1. (a) 21,000 (whole time equivalent)*
  2. (b) £174.3 million*
  3. (c) 3 hours per week per employee†
  4. (d) Equipment and Materials: £74.7 million
  5. External Contracts: £110.1 million.

* Excludes works management and professional and technical staff and their clerical support, as well as minor relevant expenses of the Prescription Pricing Authority and the Dental Estimates Board.
