HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 cc145-6W
Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total annual expenditure of the Health Service Supply Council.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The as yet unaudited accounts for 1983–84 of the Health Service Supply Council show administrative expenses of just over £278,000. The council is not involved directly in the purchasing of any NHS supplies.

Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will detail the function of the Health Services Supply Council.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Health Service Supply Council was set up by the Government in July 1980 to develop policies and introduce arrangements which will enable health authorities to make the best use of their supply resources. This responsibility includes: arranging a co-ordinated system for the purchase of equipment and supplies; introducing a comprehensive computer-based NHS supplies information system and advising on storage arrangements. In addition, the council is expected to encourage a strong innovative United Kingdom health care industry, capable of satisfying the needs of the NHS and building up a successful export market. The council's progress is recorded in its annual reports, copies of which are held in the Library.

Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what the relationship of the Health Service Supply Council will be to the National Health Service Management Board.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The relationship between the Supply Council and the National Health Service Management Board will be established when the board is set up.
