HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c556W
Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will institute an inquiry into dangers caused to the hearing of users of personal stereo sets operated at high volume.

Mr. John Patten

No. It is already generally recognised that people's hearing may be damaged by prolonged exposure to loud noise. Personal stereo sets are not capable of generating very high volumes, although the use of earphones means that lower volumes are more concentrated.
